Relocating is tough at any time of the year, but particularly around the holidays. Packing, moving, and unpacking is enough of an ordeal any other time of the year, but when you also have to decorate, cook, and entertain, good planning and organization is a must.
- Make your list. Even if you don’t normally plan your holiday celebrations out to the smallest detail, if you’re simultaneously juggling a move, good planning is important. Plan out everything: what you’re going to cook, how many people you’re going to entertain, and what dishes and decorations you’ll need.
- Check it twice. As you double check your list, also make sure that if you’re entertaining before your move, everything you need is set aside so that it doesn’t get packed by accident. If you’re entertaining after your move, pack everything you’ll need to decorate and entertain in separate boxes. To save time on rummaging through boxes, clearly label the boxes you’ll need so you can find everything quickly and easily.
- Find out who’s naughty and nice. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! The more help you have, the faster you can get up and running. Put family members or friends to work cleaning and decluttering, packing or unpacking, decorating, grocery shopping, wrapping presents, and anything else you might need help with. Hiring packers and movers will also help to free up your time for cooking and entertaining.
Relocating around the holidays doesn’t mean you can’t still have a merry holiday season. With thorough planning and good organization, you can celebrate the holidays with family and friends despite the stack of boxes looming in the next room!
